FortiGate licensing explained: FortiCare, UTP, ATP and Enterprise bundles
What is in each Fortinet subscription, bundle part-number codes, renewal rules, grace periods and how to register a FortiGate bought in the UAE.
Hardware vs services
A FortiGate ships with FortiOS and basic firewall, VPN, SD-WAN, routing and switching/AP management - these never expire. The FortiGuard security services (IPS signatures, antivirus, web filtering, application control, etc.) and FortiCare support are subscriptions. Without an active subscription the firewall keeps running but stops receiving updates, which is why bundles are sold.

Decoding FG-60F-BDL-950-12: FG-60F = model, BDL = hardware bundle, 950 = UTP with FortiCare Premium, 12 = months. FC-10-0060F-950-02-12 is the renewal-only licence for the same model (FC = FortiCare/service contract, no hardware).
Rules worth knowing
- Term starts on registration, not purchase - register within 30 days or the clock starts anyway.
- Renewals can be bought any time; co-term options align multiple devices to one date.
- Licences are tied to the serial number and the Fortinet account; we register the device to your support account so you own the entitlement.
- FortiAP and FortiSwitch managed by a FortiGate need no extra licence; FortiAnalyzer, FortiManager and FortiClient EMS are separate products.
- Grey-market devices registered in another region may be refused support - buy from an authorised partner with a UAE invoice.

What happens when my FortiGate licence expires?
The firewall keeps forwarding traffic and VPNs stay up, but security services stop updating and hardware support ends. Renew before expiry to avoid re-activation fees and a protection gap.
Can I move a FortiGate licence to a new unit?
Subscriptions are bound to the serial number. When replacing hardware under RMA Fortinet transfers it; when upgrading models you buy a new bundle, and Fortinet sometimes offers trade-in credits.
