ECC vs non-ECC memory: do you need error-correcting RAM?
What ECC memory does, where it is required (servers, workstations, NAS), how to tell UDIMM ECC from RDIMM, and when ordinary memory is fine.
What ECC does
Error-Correcting Code memory adds extra bits (typically one additional chip per rank) so the memory controller can detect and correct single-bit errors and detect multi-bit errors caused by cosmic rays, voltage noise or ageing cells. Studies on large server fleets show a memory error in roughly 8% of DIMMs per year; without ECC that becomes silent data corruption, a crash or a corrupted database page.
Where it is required
- Servers (HPE, Dell, Lenovo, Supermicro): only ECC is supported - RDIMM or LRDIMM on Xeon/EPYC platforms.
- Workstations (HP Z, Dell Precision, Lenovo P with Xeon W or Threadripper PRO): ECC RDIMM.
- NAS: business Synology (xs/xs+, some Plus models) and QNAP TS-h/TVS units use ECC UDIMM/SO-DIMM; consumer models use non-ECC. Check the exact Synology/QNAP part number.
- Desktops / gaming / laptops: non-ECC. Some AMD Ryzen boards accept unbuffered ECC - nice to have for a home server, not essential.
Types - don't mix them up
| Type | Also called | Where | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Non-ECC UDIMM | Desktop RAM | PCs, gaming | Will not boot in servers |
| ECC UDIMM | Unbuffered ECC | Entry servers (ML30, T150), NAS, workstations with Xeon E / Ryzen Pro | Not interchangeable with RDIMM |
| ECC RDIMM | Registered | Xeon Scalable, EPYC, Xeon W, Threadripper PRO | Standard server module |
| ECC LRDIMM | Load-reduced | High-capacity servers | See RDIMM vs LRDIMM |
| ECC SO-DIMM | Laptop-size ECC | NAS, micro servers, embedded | Synology D4ES01, Kingston KSM…ES |
Give us the server or NAS model number and we will quote the exact validated memory part number - wrong memory type is the most common cause of a server that will not POST.

Is ECC memory slower?
Marginally - the extra check adds about 2% latency, which is irrelevant for server workloads. Registered modules add one more clock of latency but allow far more capacity.
Does my Synology NAS need ECC RAM?
Synology Plus series (DS923+, DS1522+, DS1823xs+) use ECC SO-DIMM (D4ES01-4G/8G/16G). J and Value series use non-ECC or are not upgradable. Always use the Synology-listed module for warranty.
