How to configure a rack server: CPU, memory, drives, RAID and power explained

A practical checklist for sizing an HPE ProLiant, Dell PowerEdge or Lenovo ThinkSystem rack server for virtualisation, databases, file services or AI.

1. Start from the workload, not the model

Every configuration decision follows from what the server will run. Write down the applications (Hyper-V/VMware/Proxmox, SQL, ERP, file server, backup target, CCTV, AI inference), the number of users, expected data growth over 3-5 years, and whether you need high availability. A 2U server such as the HPE DL380 Gen11 or Dell PowerEdge R760 is the safe choice for most mixed workloads because it has room for 8-24 drives, two CPUs and several PCIe cards; a 1U server (DL360, R660) suits compute-dense racks where storage lives elsewhere.

2. Processors

Virtualisation and databases benefit from more cores and higher memory bandwidth; file and backup servers rarely need more than one mid-range CPU. Rule of thumb: 1 physical core per 2-4 light virtual machines. Intel Xeon Scalable (4th/5th Gen) and AMD EPYC (9004) both support DDR5; EPYC offers more cores and PCIe lanes per socket, Xeon has broader software licensing familiarity. If you plan to add a second CPU later, order the single-CPU server with the second heatsink kit now - it is hard to source later.

3. Memory

Use ECC registered memory (RDIMM) and populate channels evenly - 8 DIMMs per CPU on current platforms gives full bandwidth. 64 GB is the floor for a hypervisor; 256-512 GB is normal for SQL or 10+ VMs. Buy the same part number for all DIMMs (see RDIMM vs LRDIMM and ECC vs non-ECC).

4. Drives and RAID

  • OS / hypervisor: 2x 480 GB SSD in RAID 1 (or BOSS/M.2 boot module).
  • Databases / VMs: SAS or NVMe SSD in RAID 10 - write performance and rebuild speed matter more than capacity.
  • File / backup / archive: 3.5" enterprise HDD (Seagate Exos, WD Ultrastar, Toshiba MG) in RAID 6 - plan one hot spare.

Choose a hardware RAID controller with cache and battery/flash backup (HPE MR408i-o, Dell PERC H755/H965) for RAID 5/6/10; HBA mode (pass-through) is required for ZFS, Storage Spaces Direct, vSAN and Ceph. Avoid mixing drive sizes in one array.

5. Networking

Two 10 GbE ports (SFP+ or 10GBASE-T) are the current baseline; 25 GbE for storage-heavy clusters. Keep a separate 1 GbE port for iLO/iDRAC management and buy the management licence (iLO Advanced / iDRAC Enterprise) for remote console and media.

6. Power, rack and environment

Order redundant power supplies (2x 800-1600 W) sized above the sum of CPU TDPs, drives and GPUs with 30% headroom, and feed each PSU from a different UPS/PDU. Check rack depth (most 2U servers need 1,000-1,100 mm usable depth), rail kit and cable management arm. In the Gulf, ambient temperature matters: keep the server room at 18-24 °C and clean filters quarterly.

7. Warranty and support

Standard is 3-year NBD on-site; upgrade to 4-hour or 24x7 for production systems. We register warranties in your company name and can pre-configure RAID, firmware and OS before delivery in Dubai or export to the GCC and Africa.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a 1U and 2U rack server?

A 1U server (44.45 mm high) fits more compute per rack but holds fewer drives (typically 4-10) and lower-power GPUs. A 2U server holds 8-24 drives, full-height GPUs and more PCIe cards and is quieter and easier to cool.

How much RAM does a virtualisation server need?

Add up the memory of all planned virtual machines, add 4-8 GB for the hypervisor and 20-30% growth. For a typical SME with 8-12 VMs, 128-256 GB of ECC RDIMM is common.

Which RAID level should I use for a file server?

RAID 6 with enterprise HDDs is the usual choice for capacity file servers because it survives two drive failures; use RAID 10 on SSDs for databases and virtual machines.
